Snowdrops

Do you know what I was, how I lived? You know

what despair is; then

winter should have meaning for you.

 

I did not expect to survive,

earth suppressing me, I didn’t expect

to waken again, to feel

in damp earth my body

able to respond again, remembering

 

after so long how to open again

in the cold light

of earliest spring-

afraid, yes, but among you again

crying yes risk joy

 

in the raw wind of the new world.‘

나의 존재가 무엇인지, 어떻게 살았는지 아시나요?

절망이 무엇인지 아신다면

겨울은 당신에게 의미가 있을 거예요

 

내가 살아남으리라고 기대하지 않았어요

대지가 나를 짓눌렀기에

​다시 깨어나서 맨 몸으로

축축한 흙의 느낌을 기억하고

반응하리라고는

 

그토록 긴 시간이 지난 뒤

이른 봄의 차가운 빛 속에서

어떻게 다시 시작할지

두려웠지요, 그래요, 하지만 당신들에게 거듭

그것은 환희의 모험이라고 외칠 거예요

 

새로운 세상의 신선한 바람 속에서
